Bishop Alfred Mateyu Chaima of the Catholic Diocese of Zomba has hailed the World Union of Catholic Women Organisation (WUCWO) for their generous donation of food and essential supplies to two seminaries: St Peter’s Major Seminary and Nankhunda Minor Seminary.

Speaking at Zomba Cathedral Church, Bishop Chaima expressed deep appreciation for the support, describing it as a powerful demonstration of the role women play in advancing the mission of the Catholic Church.

The donations, presented at both seminaries, included bags of maize, rice, cooking oil, beans, soap, ballpoint pens, and exercise books. The items are aimed at easing the daily struggles faced by seminarians who often endure shortages of basic necessities.

“This initiative reflects the spirit of Mary, the mother of Jesus, who served God fearlessly,” said Bishop Chaima. He encouraged WUCWO members to continue their charitable efforts and urged other Catholic faithful to follow their example.

Christina Lakiyoni, Chairperson of the Catholic Women Association in the Diocese of Zomba, said the donation came in response to the pressing needs observed at the seminaries, including a lack of food and learning materials. She emphasized the importance of supporting seminarians in light of the growing shortage of priests.

Father Daniel Kamanga, Rector of St Peter’s Major Seminary, welcomed the support, calling it a timely intervention. He echoed the bishop’s appeal for continued commitment from the Catholic community in supporting both seminarians and the broader church.

Hestings Dowe, Catholic Laity Chairperson in Malawi, also praised WUCWO for their dedication. He challenged the Catholic Men Association (CMA) to take a cue from the women and join hands in promoting the welfare of future priests.

The donation stands as a clear message of solidarity and a reminder that nurturing future leaders of the Church is a responsibility shared by all.
