The High Court in Mzuzu has directed the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to conduct fresh primary elections in the Mzimba Central constituency, citing irregularities in the previous process.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Justus Kishindo found that the party had used a fraudulent electoral college, which disadvantaged claimant Vitumbiko Mumba.

Khumbo Soko, lawyer for Mumba, welcomed the court’s decision, stating that the use of a fake voters’ roll was a clear violation of fair electoral practice.

“It was evident that the process was manipulated. The court has acted justly by ordering a fresh vote,” Soko said.

In response, Adamson Mkandawire, Mumba’s opponent in the contested primary, said that while he respects the court’s ruling, he will await official guidance from the party.

“I accept the decision, but I remain confident of winning again. I will proceed according to what the party advises,” Mkandawire remarked.

Although MCP leadership did not publicly comment on the matter, an insider within the party confirmed that a meeting would be convened soon to chart the way forward.

“With the nomination paper submission deadline set for 24 July, the party will hold an urgent meeting to address the issue,” said the source.

The court’s decision is expected to reshape the political landscape in Mzimba Central ahead of the upcoming general elections.
