President Lazarus Chakwera has officially entered the race for re-election, unveiling a bold new partnership with Minister of Trade, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, as his running mate for the 16 September 2025 elections.

Speaking at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Wednesday, after submitting his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), President Chakwera described Mumba as a results-driven leader, whose commitment and passion align with the country’s development agenda.

“Mumba is a person who gets things done. As we continue building on the foundation we have laid for Malawi, we need someone who can drive real progress,” said Chakwera. “He believes in putting ‘People Over Politics’ and that is the kind of mindset we must embrace if we are to deliver a better life for all Malawians.”

Though he did not reveal the details behind the selection process, Chakwera said his decision to choose Mumba was inspired by a deep love for the country and the need to sustain momentum for national development.

Chakwera also called on all members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to unite behind the presidential ticket, stressing the importance of solidarity in moving the country forward.

In his remarks, Mumba expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him, pledging to work tirelessly to rally support for the MCP.

“I’m humbled by this opportunity and ready to give my all to ensure our party earns the people’s confidence. To my sister, Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara, thank you for showing maturity and selflessness. You have proved you are not driven by greed,” said Mumba.

Earlier, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda appealed to supporters to maintain peace throughout the campaign period.

“This is just an election, the country will still be Malawi after the votes are counted. Let’s show the world we can choose leadership peacefully,” said Banda.

President Chakwera was the final presidential hopeful to file nomination papers, marking the official close of the submission window ahead of what is expected to be a tightly contested 2025 general election.
