The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has assured Malawians that the upcoming September 16 polls will be free from double voting, stressing that the use of biometric voter verification identification devices will ensure strict compliance.

Director of Media and Public Relations at MEC, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, said this in Blantyre during a media training workshop for journalists under the banner of the Association of Muslim Journalists, held at Crossroads Hotel.

“Voting and counting will be done manually. This device is strictly for the verification of names through fingerprints, helping to identify the centre where a person registered and to speed up the voter verification process,” Mwafulirwa explained.

He further urged media houses to observe an election campaign blackout on September 15, 2025 saying the official campaign period ends at 6 a.m. on September 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, President of the Association of Muslim Journalists, Chekaukutu Ndege, underscored the crucial role journalists play in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.

“Journalists must follow the code of ethics so that their stories remain credible. Above all, the media should use its influence to promote peace and unity during the elections,” Ndege said.
