The Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has pledged its support to the newly elected government, led by President Arthur Peter Mutharika and Vice President Jane Ansah.
In a congratulatory message and best wishes to Mutharika and Ansah, MAM National Chairman Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad reaffirmed the faith based organisation’s policy of working with the government of the day.
“We wish to reiterate that our policy is to support and work with the government of the day. We offer our unflinching support to President Mutharika and his government,” Sheikh Muhammad said.
Muhammad prayed for the protection and guidance of the president and vice president-elect, asking Allah to bless Malawi.
He also urged all political parties, religious bodies, civil society organisations (CSOs) and Malawians to promote peace and unity.
“The winners should celebrate with respect, while the losers accept defeat with dignity. Let us remain united as citizens,” the Malawi Muslim leader said.
President Mutharika won the election with 3,035,249 votes (56.8%), while his main contender, Lazarus Chakwera, secured 1,765,170 votes (33.0%).
Seventeen people ran for the presidential race during the September 16 general elections.
Mutharika becomes Malawi’s seventh president, succeeding Chakwera who ousted him in 2020 fresh presidential elections.
