Mighty Mukuru Wanderers head coach Bob Mpinganjira says his side is still firmly in the title race despite a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Mzuzu City Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Reacting to the loss, Mpinganjira bemoaned his team’s failure to convert clear scoring opportunities but maintained that the battle for the championship remains wide open.

“We created a number of opportunities but we didn’t utilise them. In football, if you don’t use your chances, you get punished. Luck was not on our side today and we just have to move on,” he said.

Asked whether the Lali Lubani giants still have hope of lifting the TNM Super League title, the coach remained optimistic.

“Well, we still have chances. We will work hard in the remaining five games and see what happens,” he added.

The defeat was Wanderers’ first league loss of the season. Promise Kamwendo gave the visitors the lead in the 55th minute, but the Hammers fought back through Samson Olatubasun in the 73rd minute before Isaiah Nyirenda sealed the comeback with a stoppage-time winner in the 90+4th minute.

Wanderers remain second on the log, tied on 56 points with leaders FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who top the table on goal difference.

The Nomads return to action on Sunday when they host Ekhaya FC at Kamuzu Stadium.
