Police in Dowa District on 16 March apprehended two individuals for the illegal possession of cannabis sativa at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
The suspects have been identified as Remasi Mziiki, 22, a Congolese refugee, and Gosta Mvula, 52, a resident of Jeputala Village under Traditional Authority Msakambewa in Dowa District.
Acting on a tip-off from an anonymous source, officers from the Dzaleka Police Unit conducted a search at Mziiki’s residence in the Lisungwi area of the camp. During the operation, they discovered cannabis sativa hidden in food containers, a sack, and a plastic bag.
“Further investigations led to the arrest of Gosta Mvula, who was found near Mziiki’s residence in possession of a laptop bag containing cannabis, which had been packed in a sack and prepared for sale,” said Sitima.
When questioned, both suspects failed to produce valid licences for the possession or sale of cannabis.
They were immediately taken into custody, and the confiscated substances have since been sent for assessment.
Police have also revealed that Mziiki has a prior conviction for a similar offence.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon to face charges related to their activities.
